Beautiful moments in South Africa

So far our adventure in South-Africa has been more than pleasant. It is such a beautiful country. We have been working very hard during the days and at night relaxing, either playing indoor games or sitting outside under the beautiful sky. We wish we could share it with you all.
Hundreds of stars shine bright as diamonds. Sometimes you can see the milky way, which is so rare for us to see. Some of the days the sunlight pierces through our skin. There is something about the African sun. It is very low and the warmth of it surrounds your whole body. Although it is winter here, we can still manage to enjoy the sun.
The work is going really well. It feels good to know that all your sweat and hard work goes to those beautiful children. They are lovely and energetic children, walking around being very curious about us. Some of us have been playing with them outside and they just go wild. I guess it also keeps us in a way motivated.
We have visited a few places, seen the good and the bad side. The beach is lovely, giant waves flying out of the coast. The shopping mall is very large and a nice place to shop. You find lots of good clothing shops, some expensive but most of them are far more cheaper than in Holland. We had a lovely day at the mall. After the shopping we went to the movies, watching Madagascar being in the spirit of Africa! Lots of laughs of course. After that we had some good meals. There are lots of great restaurants. Some were excited to see KFC around.
Another day we went to visit two projects by Isi Bindi in very poor districts. The Isi Bindi projects are an initiative of the East London Child and Youth Care Centre and it is basically about catching up vulnerable children in their own neighbourhood. The child care workers are for example stimulating children to do their homework and reminding them to take their AIDS-medicines. The childcare takers talked a bit about their job and the family’s. In one of the districts there live 50 family’s with around 200 children and only 7 caretakers. It was a very informative day for us. Seeing so many people in such bad condition, you feel a sense of gratitude for your own life. Imagine your life without all the daily “luxury”… It is almost unthinkable to for us to manage with so little water, food, good shelter and healthcare… living a life of uncertainty. And yet here it is, in front of our nose, hundreds of people being hit by that reality, their reality, every single day.
Today it’s Sunday and we were invited in the afternoon by a Dutch couple to enjoy a “braai” with them. A braai is like the very large version of a barbeque. There is lots and lots of meat on the fire, drinking and relaxing. This is a tradition in South-Africa every Sunday. Everything tasted so good and our place was lovely somewhere on a hill with an amazing view. A few of the guys took a dive in the small lake. After that we came home and some of us decided to take a walk down the hills and across the lakes. Everywhere you look are trees and bushes. It was a nice walk. Too bad for all the wild animals chasing us, poisonous spiders in our neck and anacondas trying to pull us in the water… nah, just kidding! The walk couldn’t be more peaceful.
So as you can read, we are enjoying ourselves here a lot and we hope that everything is good with you too!
Greetings from South-Africa!
